Java Problem

Blackboard Users,

Blackboard has identified a problem with the latest Java update, java 1.6_29, that causes the Chat Tool in CE 8 to stop working.  At this time, Blackboard is recommending that all CE 8 users not update Java.

To easily check your version of java visit:

http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If you PC updated to java 1.6_29 please visit the following site for uninstall directions:

http://java.com/en/download/uninstall.jsp

Blackboard is recommending that users stay on Java 1.6_27.  To get this version of java visit:

Windows 32-bit

Windows 64-bit

All other operating systems

Once you have rolled back java you must set it to not auto-update:

http://java.com/en/download/help/java_update.xml#auto_update

If you are a Mac user and you computer has updated to Java 1.6_29, there is no roll back solution at this time.  You will need to find another machine to use in this case.

We have been informed that Oracle, the makers of Java, will be putting out Java 1.6 update 30 in early December to remedy this issue.  We will notify all Blackboards users when it is safe to update Java.

The ICT Helpdesk is also aware if this issue and should be able to assist.  To contact the ICT Helpdesk email help@nmsu.edu or call 575-646-1840.
